Better for Monitoring than Security
By Geoffrey Kleinman
If you are looking for a comprehensive security system, this isn’t it. The ALC AWS3266 is more a monitoring system than a security system. The upside to this is that it doesn’t require any custom wiring or installation. The two cameras plug into conventional outlets and have fairly long cables.
I was actually amazed at how easy it was to set this system up. The cameras paired with the monitor immediately. It just worked. That’s refreshing in spot where pairing devices can often be a pain in the butt.
Both cameras can be mounted, but they are sturdy enough on the stand if you don’t want to mount them. The manual advises against having them too exposed to the elements, so think of them more as weather RESISTANT than water proof.
The range is very good. We had cameras on both sides of our house and the picture and sound quality on the monitoring screen were good. Sound can be a little crackly at times, but overall it’s good. Both cameras have motion detection video recording, but to watch the videos you have to put the included SD card into a computer.
The touch screen monitor works well, but the navigation and options aren’t super intuitive and I found that I wanted to do more configuring and controlling of options, but struggled to figure out how to do that.
The big issue of course is that these cameras can easily be unplugged, rendering any security aspect that they might have useless. Also since they require a conventional plug, where you want to put them and where a plug is may be two very different places.
But as a MONITORING system, this is a nice, easy to use, easy to set up and straight forward system.

Easy to Setup with Remote Viewing
By Golfing Now
There have been a few problems in the neighborhood, so I decided to add a surveillance system. This system had the features I was looking for, plus it is wireless, so I did not have to run wires throughout the house. Setup could not have been easier. I mounted the cameras outside and plugged them into AC power, one by the front door and one at the back door. Plugged in the monitor, and I had video instantly from the cameras. I hooked up the system to the internet and downloaded their ALC Observer app for my Samsung S4, and I was remotely viewing the cameras on my phone in a few minutes. Again, it could not have been easier. We have the system in our family room and have it setup so the monitor comes on when the cameras sense motion. Nice feature! Night Vision is excellent with these camera. The system records to a SD card, and the recorded files can be viewed with the monitor or my phone. This system has too many features to list. This system is great, and I plan to add additional cameras.

Works fine, not sure about its price tag
I really like the idea of a surveillance system controlled via touch screen, and for the most part, this ALC system works fine. However, the the biggest selling point of this system — the touch screen — is unresponsive and too inaccurate at times to fully recommend this for the asking price. Also, the interface is just flat out lazy which doesn’t help matters any.
The setup of this system is nice and simple. I got all the cords and wires hooked up without issue, and the app was easily downloaded. I got everything communicating with each other within 30 minutes, so that’s a plus. In order to use remote monitoring, the touch screen base has an ethernet connection which was set up and recognized swiftly and easily by my home network configuration.
It has three modes of video recording: motion, schedule, or manual viewing. Remote viewing pretty cool as you can watch live video from your smart device at a different location. While I was at work, I was able to watch my cat prance around and play with invisible friends, so this device will be pretty handy if you’re a pet owner. Motion mode is exactly what it sounds like: it produces video when it detects movement. I found this mode to be responsive and accurate. This device comes with two cameras, but it has the ability to support four, and it dedicates each camera to its own file for easy access. I like this feature, and while I only used it with the two included cameras, it did work well.
The 50 foot night vision range seems to be spot on. I detected movement and clear video from an area roughly 45 feet away, and I could see pat that a few more feet, so its claims seem to be accurate. Each camera has six IR LED’s, so they get pretty bright. This can be a positive or a negative depending on what you’ll be using this for.
The problems begin with the touch screen and interface system. The touchscreen just isn’t that responsive, unfortunately. You’ll touch it and it will sit there for a moment, think about things, then finally work. Other times you’ll touch the screen and something that was on a different side of the screen will pop up instead. You kind of get used to inconsistency with the screen, but should you have to get used to something because it doesn’t work well? The interface system just sucks, quite frankly. The developers just three this together at the last minute it seems — I’ve seen better interfaces from the late 90’s. Just lazy implementation, ugly fonts, cumbersome placements, unintuitive screens….very bad.
In the end, this system will be best used as a true surveillance system, not a security system. The bright LED lights might scare intruders away because they’re being blinded, but if you’re employing night vision the idea is to monitor secretly, and not publicly. I can see a pet owner who wants to watch their dogs while on vacation using this system and being more than happy with it, and in that way, this is a pretty cool system. If you can live with a sloppy interface and slightly unresponsive touch screen, this unit may work for you.

A remote surveillance security system allows you to monitor the home while away. If you go on a vacation, are in the workplace, or away on business, you can have access via internet to view what your surveillance video cameras are catching on online video. This type of protection system is well suited for households who are often apart for extended periods, offices which may have chronic theft or perhaps vandalism problems, and homes with members that require the aid of a caretaker if left by itself.
