Amazing camera in a tiny package
I’ve had the camera for a few days and I am extremely happy with my initial impressions. I am full time wedding photographer and shot nearly 200,000 photos on a few 5dmkiii’s in the past couple years. I haven’t owned a “consumer” level canon camera in quite awhile. I bought this camera because I was sick of having my life captured on a cell phone, and I can’t justify carrying around a monster camera and lens everywhere I go.
– Image quality – I’m extremely impressed with the color quality, noise level and resolution of the jpegs coming out of the camera. I haven’t had the chance to compare the dynamic range to canon’s professional cameras, but it’s what you’d expect out of top of a the line aps-c sensor. I did a few low light shots, and the noise level seemed very reasonable at 3200 ISO, and definitely usable at 6400 ISO. 25600 ISO was noisy enough that I’d rather use a flash.
Auto-Focus – For still objects the autofocus was extremely accurate and quite quick. Not as fast as my 5dmkiii, but probably around .5-1 second to lock on. I tried out touch focus, and single point both of which worked well. It also has a tracking mode where you can touch any subject on the screen and it will keep it in focus. All these methods worked well and resulted in near perfect focus. The camera also has one touch controls to switch to manual focus with focus peaking on the screen. I have not the chance to try out the servo mode, but in one shot mode the focus wasn’t fast enough to keep up with fast moving subjects in low light.
Build quality – It’s not a metal body, but the the plastic seems more solid than what I remember from the digital rebels I used to own. The flip out screen and pop up flash seem really solid and I expect that they will last a long time with proper care. The hinges on both of these mechanisms are small and metal. I would imagine that if you dropped the camera with the screen flipped out or the flash out that you could probably bend them.
Features – My 5dmkiii has very few frills so I was impressed by these items. From my perspective the built in WIFI is really nice. It’s easy to send photos to your phone, google drive, your computer, flicker and a handful of other services. The flip out screen is awesome. Gone are the days when you have to lay in the dirt to get a photo a few inches off the ground. You can even flip the screen forward for a selfie mode. Say what you will, but I have numerous times given my camera to a stranger to take a photo while traveling and have them take something ridiculously awful. I’ve gotten pretty good at the dslr selfie, but this screen will definitely make it easier. The pop up flash allows you to tilt it up for bounce flash. Nothing looks worse than a tiny flash pointed straight in the face of your subject, but with bounce flash you can get a professional look from your tiny camera.
Controls- I passed on the first versions of the EOS M because of the lack of external controls. With the M3 it is finally a camera for serious photographers. You can easily shoot anywhere from full auto to full manual with all the controls at your finger tips just like a real DSLR. It even has auto exposure adjustment dial which makes shooting TV or AV very easy. Every bit of control or information you’d get in a high end DSLR like the 5dmkiii you get in this camera including custom programmable buttons.
Conclusion – Mirrorless cameras are the future of photography. At some point the bulk of a camera like the 5dmkiii + high end lens makes you a worse photographer. If you’re serious about photography, but your current camera is so big that you don’t use it, then this is great option. Once you consider the lens options for this camera vs competitors by sony and nikon it is a no brainer.

One of the best camera options for the money and size.

Honestly if you can find this for about 450 (check ebay) (though if you dont have a eos m lens or adapter might want to get the kit) this is one of the BEST cameras to get for the price in my opinion if you are not a pro but want to get into nicer photographs or if you are a pro and already have a lot of canon lenses and wanted a smaller camera to carry around (though you will need the adapter) But honestly for people like me who are not a pro but have been interested in improving in photography without spending thousands of bucks this is a great solution. If you have the M1 it really is a great step up. It provides a lot more physical buttons (a nice rotating ring under the shutter button for adjusting things on the fly like apature) AND dedicated ZOOM buttons which is great as the M1s “pinch to zoom” on viewing images was just a bit too finiky to me so having dedicated buttons to do that is a big plus. The Wifi connectivity is really fun, if your somewhere where you have wifi access and want to check your photos on your phone or tablet (best with a tablet as likely with your phone your screen wont be all that much bigger) its nice to be able to transfer it on the fly and even control the camera with your phone/tablet. I LOVE the flip screen it really is a great update and lets you do things like selfies and has a bit of angle for better doing things like photos of flowers and such below you on a bright day.
ONE HUGE tip: to get the BEST possible image quality out of the M3 ALWAYS SHOOT in RAW. There is an issue that ive seen that even with the ISO noise reduction turned OFF the camera apparently STILL softens the image a bit in jpeg form for some reason. so the best tip is to always shoot in JPEG+RAW mode that way you can easily pull up the jpeg files for quick review BUT also have the higher detailed RAW files to process later.
In RAW form zooming and looking at the images it really is fantastic resolution, something that actually might convince you to either buy a 4K TV or 4K moniter to best apprechate it (though it cannot take 4K video just..for using photos)
Its a damn shame (can i say that?) that Canon decided not to market and normally sell this in the United States, My best advice is to try to get it from a US seller that way you dont have to wait weeks to import and just in case there is something wrong out of the box likely much easier in returning it. Canon i think could have done well selling this in the US but hey you can feel cool that you have a nice little camera that you normally cant “get” in the US!
My BEST Suggestion to pair this camera with an EOS M adapter (for using any other canon lens) AND the Canon 50mm 1.8 STM Lens which i have decided is the BEST Combination in my opinion for the price and all for taking photos of people (you can also get the EOS M spacific 22mm 2.0 Lens which is a great lens too BUT the 50mm gives a better flatter look for people which makes the photos look a bit more professional while still being lightweight and fast to focus) with the right lenses the EOS M3 is much faster then the M1 for sure!
I have a disablity and have used photography to connect with people but gotten away from it for a while and the M3 has resparked that passion for it. It really shows that you dont need to spend gobs of money for a nice camera setup.
Have not been happier with this purchase (i got it on ebay for a good deal).

Good image quality, I am still figuring out focus
Arrived on time and in good condition. I ordered with the 22 mm lens. I like it a lot. It takes really sharp images although I am still coming to terms with the auto focus. I also purchased the lens adapter to use other Canon EF lenses and that works nicely. The “Scenes” mode allows me to experiment around with more custom settings without having to know much. The buttons and also the touch screen all respond well and seem well constructed. Small size, but feels good in the hand, some heft (just right). Mine came with body cap, hot shoe cover, lens caps, neck strap, battery and charger – no memory card.

Mirrorless Cameras are Digital Cameras which provide the photo quality and versatility of professional Digital Single-Lens Response cameras (DSLRs), together with a mobility closer to those of a more common “point and shoot” digital camera. They are also otherwise known as Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Digital Cameras simply because that, distinct from your common Digital Cameras for consumer market, that they provide a mechanism to change lenses conveniently, since it’s done with professional ones.
