Works OK after cumbersome installation. Networking access is marginal. Tech Support is worse.
By Richard A Pasetto
I bought the same system at Home Depot. Defender has many products and their tech support people have trouble understanding which is which… that’s the tip of the iceberg.
Installation went OK but their manual is cryptic and in some cases wrong; especially the case regarding setting up networking. Videos look great on a locally attached monitor, and I used the cheapest LCD monitor I could get. However, in order to access this system remotely over the internet ,it’s necessary to set up an account with the DynDNS service; their tech support told me that after many wasted hours. Not a show stopper (although it does cost an extra few bucks) but a lot of time is wasted looking at the DVR menus and their documentation to find out some options that are there do not work.
Once network access is set up, performance varies from fair to NG (Missing videos in camera window is the worst of it). Also some of the features if the Internet-Explorer based webpages just do not work; and dont expect to use this with any other web browsers. FIrefox will not work and I gave up trying others. Defender support tries to blame everybody from the user to the ISP but the fact is that even on the local network, using a router that’s orders of magnitude faster than the “bitrate” they appear to use, performance is just plain bad.
Don’t expect to get clear videos on your computer over the network, be happy if you can see all the cameras. Good news is that the 3rd party app “Asee” will show cameras on most android smartphones. Also, I received a tip from another user that the Swann camera android app also works with these Defender systems. (I don’t know about iPhone support).
I actually had initially recommended this system to a couple of friends. Stopped recommending when I started to deal with their not-working-networking and defensive, accusatory attitude of tech support. I will now withdraw my recommendations.
Living with the system for now… Eventually I will begone to research replacement options.

Great system for the price
I originally found this system on the Home Depot site on sale for $309. When I went to order it had gone up to $400 so I ordered here. The 600 TVL cameras provide a more detailed picture than the 480 cameras that come with most low end systems. DVR works great and can be accessed remotely by computer or smart phone.

I bought mine online from Sam’s club for under $500. It pays to shop around. Did extensive research before buying this one. Got it all hooked up today. So far so good. Will update my review after I have used it some.
