… when it went on sale and boy am I glad I did
By David R Tilley
I was waiting to buy this when it went on sale and boy am I glad I did! Not only did I get this at 60% off but the quality of it is pretty amazing! Now, this is far from a professional set, but for something cost effective and with good quality footage, look no further! Setting this up was a breeze, the most time consuming being putting the cameras up and routing the wires. Setting up the DVR was a cinch, even connecting it to my home network and phone for remote view.
Living in Alaska, I was looking for something with great night vision capabilities since, like it is right now, it gets dark for most of the day and this one does what it advertises. At 100′ out you won’t be able to make out any appearances, but you can see someone there in pitch black conditions. 20′ and closer You could make out appearances but probably nothing to identify a single person unless they stop and look directly at the camera, whose IR lights do emit an ominous red glow which may deter some intruders.
The cameras have held up extremely well in rain, sleet, snow and single digit temperatures so far. However, when it does snow, that’s literally all you’ll see. At least at night. I have not messed with the motion detector alarms since there’s a lot of movement on my property with dogs, moose and my roommate and myself coming and going frequently. I may set it up in the future, but the amount of notifications I might get in return has kept me from doing so.
My one main gripe about this is that when adjusting the cameras themselves, there’s a little screw that gets covered by the housing that makes tightening it extremely hard to near impossible.
I can’t recall how I set up the remote view but if anyone wants to know how, just let me know and I’ll guide you through it. I’ve had no issues since and had it up and running in less than 5 minutes. I do remember though that you NEED to use Internet Explorer run in compatibility mode for some of the setup. Everything else if just inputting the correct information given to you.
Overall I am extremely satisfied with this product and have already recommended it to several friends and family members.

Vandals cannot hide
So far, so good, I bought this system and installed it after my daughters car was vandalized while parked next to the garage recently.
The night vision is good, but I added an IR Illuminator just behind and below one of the cameras in the area where the cars are parked. The extra illumination turns that vulnerable spot into an extremely well lit and visible area. Setup was easy. The only hard part was running the cable under the siding and through the walls into the house. I was able to get the remote viewing set up on my smart phone fairly easily using the downloaded Defender “one step” software.
I have talked to Defender customer service on a few occasions now and aside from the long wait ( usually about 20 minutes) they have been reasonably helpful. If the system works this well for the next few years I will be very satisfied.

Good product, good customer service.
Overall satisfied with this product and would recommend it to others. Good quality & design, ease of use. Customer service helped me through some email issues that I had. I wished the motion detection sensitivity could be less than even the lowest setting as I get nuisance alerts. Happy overall with this product.
UPDATE Oct 2015
I wanted to update my review after having used the product for a while now. Overall rating the same but like most products your satisfaction depends on your needs.
I bought this product to accomplish the following:
1) View my property from inside my house during the day & at night. – Excellent results.
2) View my property remotely – Overall good results. Main issue is that the protocols are complicated and if your internet provider changes your ip addresses which happens sometimes, you have to re-enter new settings from the DVR so you are sol if you are not at home, until you get home.
3) Receive alerts of suspicious activity – Fair results – the main issue is that the cameras are too sensitive even on the lowest setting so you are inundated with false positive results. [Oh look! There’s a moth! Theres’s a spider! Lookout, the sunlight is changing! Call the police, the sprinklers are sprinkling!]. The net result is a bunch of worthless emails, although I have some interesting close-ups of wasps and birds. you cannot set the beeper on at night or your wife will strangle you when the spider moves and keeps her awake. If the sensitivity could be reduced to only pick up significant motion, (such as Jason or Michael Myers), it would be perfect and 5 stars.
The customer service really is good and Michel helped me a lot.

A whole lot of crimes are happening in the home. This kind of has increased the requirement to have a security system in the home. Parents and homeowners are certainly not always at home. Hence, important things and people are left at home unprotected and unsafe from people who are out to do them harm. As parents are gone for long periods of time everyday, a surveillance DVR is the only thing that can manage this as compared to VCRs that can simply manage small amounts of time.
