GW Security VD821SDI-T
I have a Lorex HD 8 channel security system at my home, and I had wanted to purchase a PTZ camera for quite sometime, but had not seen any HD PTZ cameras until recently. Most PTZ camera prices were more than I wanted to pay for something I really didn’t need. There are several GW HD PTZ cameras listed on Amazon, and the prices vary by several hundred dollars but the specifications are very similar. I had purchased the GW788HDSDI variable focus camera about a year earlier and was very pleased with the HD quality and the ability to manually change the zoom and focus. There were not very many reviews on any of the PTZ cameras, so I decided to buy one of the cheaper ones.
I had one of the cameras in my home system aimed at some bird feeders in a tree in my yard and wanted to be able to zoom in on a particular feeder when there were birds present, so I replaced that camera with the PTZ camera. The video quality and 20X zoom capability were exactly what I wanted and have produced some very detailed bird videos. Rather than use the PTZ control features in my security system DVR, I purchased a separate joystick controller (RioRand LCD Security PTZ Speed Dome Camera 3D Keyboard Controller).
The only reason I gave the PTZ camera 4 stars instead of 5 is because of a problem with the DC power connector on the short cable coming from the camera mount. This problem was mentioned by another user in one of the reviews for a similar GW PTZ camera. The camera DC power connector would not connect to the mating power connector on a standard 60′ video/power extension cable. The GW tech support was very helpful, and although it took several weeks to resolve the problem, they sent me a short adapter cable to install between the two incompatible power connectors.
While waiting for the adapter cable, I used a an AC extension cord and located the camera power supply outdoors. I assume that GW will modify future PTZ cameras to use the compatible power connector and will provide the adapter cable for existing units being sold. I could not find any 60′ extension cables that had video, power, and PTZ control cables together. However, I just used my existing 60′ video/power cable for the fixed camera and ran an additional 2 wire cable for the RS485 control signals. GW does not recommend using extension cables longer 50′ for the PTZ cameras because the increased current draw when the camera is moving and when the IR Leds are on at night might cause the camera voltage to drop too low. However I have not had any problems using a 60′ extension cable with my camera.
Although I had used some of PTZ features in a work environment, this was the first time I had owned one and had a chance to check out the features of these cameras. There are numerous options to remotely change the camera features, and this model also has an “auto tracking” feature for moving objects (though I have not had a need to try that). I have used the preset function to remotely select different bird feeder locations by pressing a couple of buttons. There was a heavy rainstorm today and I thought I was going to have to clean the water drops off the camera lens, but then I remembered the little wiper arm that activates during the camera power up sequence. Sure enough, I was able to activate it remotely to clean the lens.
Unfortunately GW does not provide a manual or much information about their cameras on line, but tech support can usually answer your questions. Once you have the camera in hand, you can usually figure things out if you have a basic knowledge of how PTZ cameras work. GW could probably sell more cameras if they provided more information about their products.
Overall I have been very pleased with this product and other GW products I have purchased. In the several weeks since I purchased the PTZ, the price on Amazon has gone down by about $100 so it seems to be well worth the cost.

When you are building your security camera systems or setting up your home security digital cameras, review your camera options. The dome camera might not exactly fulfill your entire camera needs in all cases, but my wager is down that you will want some dome digital cameras in your system. Don’t overlook the benefits of the artificial cameras to supplement your system. Remember there is no better evidence in court then a time stamped security video of the crime, and the best way to manage criminals, is by deterring them, rather than facing them.
