My initial impression of this unit is very good
By Sea Stew
My initial impression of this unit is very good, particularly the enhanced tools and digital zoom capability. Note: The system does not contain a fan, just a heat sink on the board processor. Also, I upgraded the system OEM WD 1TB to a WD Purple (WD30PURX) 3TB Surveillance Hard Drive that I also purchased on Amazon.com.
The OEM supplied cameras perform very well in the daytime; however, the nighttime performance is well below par. Therefore, I installed the Samsung SDC-7340BC purchased from Amazon.com to resolve the nighttime issue (see attached photo comparison). In summary, the LaView system is a robust analog alternative which is feature rich in ease of use, design, and daytime performance; however, the native IR illumination must be augmented or upgraded to match the daytime performance.

My initial thought is this is a pretty impressive system. However, while the hardware is plug and play, the software is not, and if you are not at all computer/networking savvy, setting this up may present some challenges as there are limited instructions provided. The manufacturer has created a number of how-to videos on YouTube which help but don’t cover all of the various features and settings the DVR has to offer.
*Cell Phone Access – The LaView Net HD app works flawlessly on my android phone for remote monitoring of live video and recorded clips. The app is pretty slick and will let you digitally zoom in on any of the live video feeds.
*Remote Desktop Access – After performing the necessary port forwarding on my router I was only able to view the live video feed from a remote desktop utilizing Mozilla Firefox. Internet Explorer and Google Chrome would allow me to log into the DVR but would not display the live video feed even after downloading and installing the recommended plugin
*Email Notification – Email notifications of motion events and exceptions work nicely. One thing to note when setting this up, Gmail’s SMTP server blocks access from this DVR device so I had to use my internet service provider’s SMTP server in order to have the notification emails sent to my Gmail account.
I think its worth mentioning the connectors at the ends of the provided siamese cables are quite large and will likely require drilling 1/2 inch holes to feed them through walls, ceilings, etc. which could get ugly. The IP camera systems LaView sells utilize CAT5 ethernet cable for supplying both the video signal and power to and from the cameras. With a separately purchased crimping tool one could cut the connectors off the ends of the cables, allowing them to be fished through much smaller holes (the outside diameter of the cable itself), and then crimp on new ends when making the final connections. Looking back this benefit may have justified the additional cost, not to mention the IP cameras have even higher 1080P resolution.
I caught this system on a black Friday sale and for the money spent I am very pleased with the features and performance. The only thing left now is to see how long it will hold up. I will expand upon my review once I have had more time to evaluate but at this point I would definitely recommend this product to others.

Easy set up

Great system, easy to set up local but can be a pain to get set up to view on your phone. They do have many great videos to help and their tech support are friendly and knowledgeable. Make sure you only need 4 cameras (and you can add an IP cam if you want).

A lot of crimes are occurring in the home. This kind of has increased the need to have a security system in your home. Parents and homeowners are not always at home. Hence, important things and people are left at home unprotected and unsafe from people who are out to do them harm. As parents are gone for a long time everyday, a security DVR is the only thing that can deal with this as compared to VCRs that can simply manage small amounts of time.
