Why this: I am a design student getting tired of renting a camera I barely understand from school, and I like to photograph moments, which means I’m not big on camera knowledge but I love to have one on me. I needed something that would take good quality photos, that wasn’t difficult to learn, and that was very light and easy to carry around.
Quality: Resolution is amazing. Without changing any settings, I can have a high-quality photo that is a size that works for my projects.
Ease: Click on the screen where to focus and it INSTANTLY snaps the photo. Don’t have any interest in that? That’s fine, just turn that feature off! The flash seems to work pretty well, and is actually kind of cute in a robotic way. As a non-professional, the aperture is fun to play with, and the 10-30mm lens it comes with does surprising well for macro photos. I was afraid I would need to get more lenses, and I might later, but this one does just fine for now. Putting the lens on, you do place it in reverse to what you might typically think, although that may be for all lenses for all I know. Also, all buttons and the touch screen are very comfortable and easy to use, in my opinion.
Weight: For the quality you are getting with this camera, the weight is unbelievable. This is perfect to throw into a bag without worrying about stressing out your shoulders.
WiFi? I know a lot of people have asked about the wifi, which is apparently not new for Nikon, but I’ll go ahead and put what I know about it anyways. The camera acts as a WiFi device, somewhat similar to how bluetooth works. There are a few ways to connect it, but the way I did it was I downloaded the app to my phone, turned the WiFi on through the camera’s menu, turn the WiFi on in my phone, and then search for my camera in what is available from my phone (make sense?). Then it automatically connects to the app and you can view and download your photos. Very nice, actually. You are also supposed to able to take photos from your camera through your phone, if your battery is charged enough. This can be good for personal photos when you want to be included, but I wonder if someone close enough can also control the camera when you’re least expecting it.
Anyways, there’s a lot to explore and I would do a better review later, but I usually forget to do these things anyways. If you have any questions, I can do my best to answer them.

Portable, Crisp, Easy and Fun
By N. Smith
About me: I’m a novice with a camera who has never had an SLR camera. I’ve had a few digital cameras over the years as well as my cell phone, but wanted something with more range to capture the sights and scenery on an upcoming trip. My 6 year old point and shoot has been acting aged and unreliable – stuff that doesn’t seem to be related to battery. Those were my excuses for making the plunge on the Nikon 1 J4 with 10-30mm lens.
The camera is portable, user-friendly and fun to use, capturing lovely images. I’ve had at least 5 people walk up to ask me about my tiny camera with interchangeable lenses (yes, I already bought the 30-110mm lens.) They comment on the camera’s very portable size and surprise about the interchangeable lenses and seem impressed with the crisp display. I’m impressed that it can make my photos look good.
Out of the box: a manual and DVD of Nikon’s NX2 software, the next layer contains the camera body, lens, camera to computer USB cable, battery, charger, and neck strap. I’ve had the J4 for 3 weeks and taken 350 images, the manual still hasn’t been cracked open. I will get into the manual very soon to help discover some manual modes and how to stitch photos on the camera to make a panoramic photo.
The menus are easy to navigate and the display screen is crisp and clear. I am find it very easy and straight-forward to change settings, whether it be for image type(NEF/JPG or combination thereof), or between image capture modes (manual, auto, creative.)
The shutter is very fast and whatever algorithm they have for image stabilization does a LOT to help with camera shake. The images have turned out crisp and colorful. I’ve been able to do some close-ups of things, blurring the background. The image stabilization is better on the J4 than my older digital P&S or iPhone.
– the camera is easy for me to understand
– forgiving of my lack of rock-steady hands
– very fast shutter to capture motion shots
– very small in profile
– not too heavy or bulky with the lens attached – it won’t fit in my pocket, but won’t weigh me down
– takes crisp, clear images
– takes a microSD card (the tiny, tiny cards) instead SD cards – so plan accordingly!
Things I’ve not yet tried:
– wifi, and probably never will try it
– video, but will be using the J4 for video
– NX2 software – I’ve messed around with it, but can’t say how it compares to other programs.

Amazing high speed video – but have to remove battery to charge
By Joshua M. Levine
These are initial thoughts after my first week. I will update as I learn more.
The most amazing feature that most people do not know about is the 1200 frame per second high speed video mode. The resolution is limited and you can only shoot 4 seconds, but if you need it, this feature is a deal maker and enough to justify the purchase. For anything from analyzing golf swings, to debugging flickering LEDs (what I use it for), it is an amazing tool.
Must remove the battery to charge- it does not charge though the USB port. This means that you must bring the bulky charger with you rather than the USB cable you probably are bringing anyway. This is silly. It also means that you have to remove your tripod shoe every time you charge your battery and loose any alignment you had. Argh.

Mirrorless Cameras are Digital Video cameras which provide the photo quality and versatility of professional Digital Single-Lens Reflex cameras (DSLRs), combined with a mobility closer to that of a more common “point and shoot” digital camera. They are also often called Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Digital camera models simply because that, specific through the common Digital Video cameras for consumer market, that they provide a mechanism to change lenses conveniently, since it’s done with professional ones.
