When ever deciding to buy a fresh camera or simply improving the the one which you have, there are many factors to consider. There are some fantastic makes and models of cameras in the stores, but a good secure point and shoot camera is merely as good as a digital single contact lens camera. An average person uses their camera to take family shots, and vacation photographs and though they do not really understand mega pixels, resolution and exposure, as long as their camera takes a good picture, they will be pleased with the results. The technology in an area and shoot camera is fantastic these times, that they can now outperform some more expensive cameras on the market.

A lot of bang for the buck, BUT….
so far, so good. It’s been to just Sicily so far. BUT, three things:
1. no instruction manual, cheap and idiotic on Nikon’s part. Give us a small guide on cheap, thin paper, but give us a manual! The on-line manual is quite simply inadequate. They won’t even sell us one.
2. No viewfinder. This is a bigger shortcoming than I realized. On sunny or glaring days, you will not be able to see the screen. This makes for simply guessing at what picture you are taking. And,
3. So far I cannot get the GPS/landmark feature to work. This is even after printing out the damn manual (see #1.) I bought this camera because of having this feature.

OK for the price but dreadful indoor performance
By lina tutt
A bit disappointing really. When the light is good and it is in a good mood, it’ll take great photos and video (like indoor arena with good lighting). But out on a sunny day, it struggles a bit. Photos were ok but a little over exposed and the video was ok but even more over exposed. This was all done on the auto setting. When it’s good, it’s really good but although I guess it’s in the cheaper price range, I expected a bit better from a company like Nikon.
The real problem with the S9700 is the lower lighting situation….indoor birthday party in my case. Very poor performance – just dreadful. And the flash is complete rubbish. Tries to pop up right where you want to hold the camera and it’s only job seems to be to turn every indoor photo orange! Thought it may be me but it’s on auto – it should deal with it – my Canon Powershot doesn’t have a problem in low light why does the Nikon S9700.
As a point-and-shooter who doesn’t want to dig out the DLSR for snap shots, I need a camera that has at least decent quality for the price point and is consistent. I don’t want to worry about exposure and lighting etc and this camera doesn’t allow that. It’s hit and miss and you’ll either have to know how to tweak the settings, which this camera does seem to have quite a few of, or take your chances on the end result.

Good but not quite great…
By Buy American
Love the 30x zoom, large 3″ display, fast GPS with basic POIs, one-button video recording, smile-recognition (untested), and the fact that it uses full-size SD cards. Disappointed that the GPS coordinates don’t appear on or in each picture (you have to cross-reference a .LST (text) file to get the longitude/latitude). Not impressed with the detail resolved but love the tonal & color rendition. It would have been nice to include a lens cover to protect the fragile leaf-type lens cover and I sure miss viewfinders. User manual has to be downloaded from Nikon web site.

Now, I’m not going to tell you that you can take better photos with a point and shoot camera than you can with an DIGITAL CAMERA. But, I’m never going to inform you that you aren’t take good photos with them either. If a point and shoot has an aperture priority, shutter release priority, or a hands-on shooting mode, you should have some pretty good control over what the photo will look like. But, even if it doesn’t have custom shooting modes, you can still get favorable results. After all, there are groups of photographers that pride themselves on getting great photos using only their cellphone cameras.
That’s the whole thing you should know about this product. With this type of comprehensive input, you’re going to get plenty of guideline so there’s not a single opportunity to make the wrong decision. Don’t forget that best valued one isn’t always be the most cost effective one. Price won’t be described as a problem when it meets your decision.
