5Excellent camera!
By Bron
First, this is one of the finest looking cameras I’ve seen recently. The design is primo. I love the look. That is, in fact, what first caught my eye and attracted my attention. The GM1, GM5 and the GX7 get all the attention (and now the GX8) leaving the GF7 as a real “sleeper” (in my opinion). It has the same sensor and image quality as the GX7 (excellent – more below), but in a very compact body. Not as much metal in it as the GM1, but it feels very solid and well built nevertheless (with the possible exception of the control dial on the back, but a minor quibble for the prices being asked)..

The icing on the cake is that because of this, you can now find kits with the GF7, the 12-32mm kit lens, and the outstanding 35-100mm f/4-5.6 OIS lens for around $500 bucks or a little more these days. That’s a lot of excellent gear for that price (the 35-100mm f/4-5.6 lens alone sells for up to $400). But all of this means nothing unless the GF7 is a good camera, handles well, and gets you good images.

So does it? I say yes! My first test shots brought a smile to my face! The kit lens is very good and the 35-100mm is outstanding – incredibly sharp for the price. The level of detail in the out of camera JPEGS is simply excellent. (JPEGS have been so good, I have not even shot any RAW yet.) Far better than expected for this price range. The camera handles very well. It’s the perfect size for me. About as small as I could possibly go, I think, yet still large enough to hold and handle well.

But the performance is what seals the deal. It is excellent. The auto-focus is instantaneous and perfect. Shooting with this camera was just an all around excellent experience. I did go through and check settings before starting out, of course, but most things I left alone or changed mainly just to suit my preferences. The JEPGs had good color and lots of fine detail, and especially good were the shadow areas, with good detail and very little, if any, noise or smearing, good dynamic range for sure. In short, this camera was all I hoped it would be.

I enjoyed shooting with this camera right off the bat. That’s important to me. I need to enjoy using the camera I’m carrying and I definitely do with the GF7. Auto-focus was fast and error-free during my tests. Control dials/buttons are minimal due to camera size, but the touch screen provides a good interface and you can reprogram the Wifi button to control various functions which helps. I assigned ISO, but you have many choices. (There is also a quick-function menu.)

The screen is bright (no EVF alas, but I’m learning to live with that exchange for small size). It has a level (horizon) gauge, histograms and all the other must have stuff, so no issues there. Exposure was very accurate on both sunny and overcast days. I shoot landscapes and street mostly and it excels in both of those areas. The GF7 is fast, responsive and also has the image quality, color and details for on-the-go landscape work.

Small and easy to carry, fast and responsive, outstanding image detail and overall great IQ, the GF7 is an excellent choice, in my opinion, for your grab-and-go kit bag. I do *not* consider it as just an “entry level” camera. To me it’s far more than that. It’s an excellent tool capable of great photography.

Update: The more I shoot with this camera, the more I love it. Truly excellent. I highly recommend it. If the GF7 is little above your price range, then I can also recommend the Olympus E-PM2. which is also an excellent camera with great image quality. Very similar, actually, to the GF7. I like them both very much. The E-PM2 can often be found at very low prices, making it an outstanding value, in my opinion. 5Love this as a second body
By Jeffrey Whitman
Love this little camera! I use it as a second body to a bigger Panasonic camera. I keep either the Panasonic 12-32 zoom lens or my Panasonic 42.5mm 1.7 on the gf7. It has a great sensor and perfect ergonomics. Worth it just to not have to change lenses.
