NICE BASIC SYSTEM. GOOD FEATURES AND PICTURE QUALITY. HYPER-SENSITIVE MOTION DETECTION
By J. Caffarella
I live in a community with little crime, so I never thought my home would be a target for thieves, but a few years ago – in broad daylight – my home was broken into and burglarized. The experience was eye opening and made me think seriously about home security and steps I could take to make my home more secure and less desirable for thieves. There were no witnesses to the break-in and, at the time, I didn’t have cameras installed, so the identity of the thieves remains unknown. I’ve since made changes to make unwanted entry into my home virtually impossible, including subscription to an alarm monitoring company, and now installation of this Q-See surveillance system. I ran the DVR and cameras back to a 19-inch LCD color TV/monitor I purchased a few years ago, but never really had a use for, until now. I’m somewhat savvy when it comes to electronics, and am no stranger to DIY projects, but having no prior experience with this sort of equipment, I was a bit intimidated by the Q-See surveillance system, thinking it would be complicated to install and to use, but it wasn’t, until it came to accessing the menus for the first time. I had trouble navigating through the menus, but eventually figured it out after reading and following the instructions, which are well-detailed, but I would not go so far as to say they are easily understood by someone with no prior knowledge or experience with this sort of equipment. Once you install one camera, the process is the same for every other camera. Each camera includes 60-feet of shielded cable. With some planning, I was able to run cables (mostly in the attic space) and place cameras in locations I thought would be the most effective deterrent. This system provides 8 cameras, operating on 8-channels, which is the maximum this system will handle. The DVR is relatively compact; equal in size to that of a large cereal box, so it doesn’t take up much space on a desk or in an A/V cabinet. A remote control and optical mouse are included for accessing the Q-See’s on-screen menus. Although you can zoom the cameras up to 4X while viewing live or during playback, which is a nice feature, the cameras are fixed and don’t have the ability to tilt or pan, so you need to install more cameras in order to capture all of the angles. For that reason, if your goal is to cover a property with multiple entries and access points, I recommend this 8-camera set up, or a kit with more than 8 cameras. The clarity and quality of the un-zoomed images on my 19-inch flat panel LCD TV/monitor connected via HDMI to the DVR is very good and `live’ feed is the same quality as recorded. There are also settings for QVGA and VGA. With a few mouse clicks, I can switch back and forth between TV programming and the surveillance footage. You can also access the menu through controls on the DVR. I personally don’t like seeing exposed wires, so my installation is in-wall. Installation is not difficult, and there is no shortage of detailed instructional materials included with the Q-See surveillance system, but installation does take time, so plan to spend a number of hours determining the location of the cameras and the better part of a weekend reading and performing installation, especially if you plan to run cables inside of walls, as I did, which significantly increases the burden hours for installation. Since the provided cables are shielded, they can be run inside the same wall cavity as electrical wiring, which makes planning the cable route from camera to DVR a bit easier. A con that I have is with the menus setup, which wasn’t necessarily user-friendly or intuitive, with a number of folders, which made finding anything difficult, especially at first. After some time, I started to understand the menu setup but still think this could be improved upon. Another con is that I filled half the DVR’s 1 terabyte hard drive in about 1-week having captured mostly empty rooms on video. The DVR is set to record on motion only, but seems to be recording even when there’s no activity. I haven’t had a chance to fiddle with this to determine the cause, but my guess is that the default sensitivity of the motion detection is probably too high and will need to be set lower, if possible. In short, this Q-See surveillance system comes to you complete with everything needed for installation of up to 8 cameras in the box. This system performs well, with a video output and features that rivals that of commercial systems costing thousands of dollars. Images are clear and not distorted, even those taken in total darkness. Overall, I’m very satisfied with the performance of this Q-See surveillance system. While there can be no guarantee against a break-in, if anything should happen on my property while I’m not at home, Q-See will be there to capture it. Overall, I’m very satisfied with the performance of this Q-See surveillance system.
