5Good Camera for the Price
By Earl Jay O. Caoile
Obviously anyone buying a camera like this is looking for something a lot better than a phone camera. The NX300M definitely accomplishes this. Picture resolution can be adjusted between 1024×1024 all the way to 5472 x 3648! Max resolution places it between the so-called 4k and 8k resolutions. With that said, resolution isn’t the only indicator of image clarity. I wish I could post some example pictures, but Amazon appears to have disabled photo uploads. Oh well. Look at Flickr for images tagged with this camera and you’ll see some nice pictures.

Some people griped about an external viewfinder (EVF) not being available. This may be a downside for those trying to squeeze as much battery life as they can, but I don’t often take pictures for extended periods. Therefore, it does not bother me so much. The lack of EVF also helps to cut down on size. To aid with battery life, the display is set to turn off after 30 seconds of no use. One can turn the display back on by hitting the button on top as if you were going to take a picture.

The two main features that make the NX300M different from the regular NX300 are the 180-degree flippable display and the Tizen OS, which is open-source. The flexible display makes this camera ideal for “selfies.” This may seem silly to some folks, but Samsung is a South Korean company, and that country is very much into selfies. The other reason for a flexible display is to help with shooting at awkward angles. The open-source OS allows developers to customize the software a little bit. There are a few “hacks” one can perform on the camera. Options seem rather limited, but they’re there…

The reason to get this over the NX3000 is that it has a higher resolution screen that’s also a touchscreen. For a camera that doesn’t have an EVF, I wouldn’t settle for a watered down screen. If you’re so strapped on cash that you need to cut corners to this extent, you might want to consider hold off on buying a camera in the first place.

That brings me to my next point. If you’re really into photography, you’ll buy different lenses. That’s the real reason to get a Samsung camera: their lenses are nice. At the bare minimum, I recommend getting the 30mm NX Pancake lens for portability. It just barely manages to fit into a pants pocket when connected to the NX300M and definitely fits into a bigger coat pocket. Another option is keeping the lens and camera apart in your pocket and then putting them together when you want to take pictures. The 18-55mm lens that comes with the camera is good for general use, but it lacks the portability of the smaller lenses and the power of the bigger lenses. If I decide to take photography more seriously, I might get something like the 16-50mm or 50-200mm lenses.

Along with buying different lenses, getting the most out of this camera also requires messing around with the settings. Novice users may stick with the auto mode, but taking yourself out of your comfort zone and messing around with the settings can pay off in the long run. Try taking pictures of the same object using different camera settings and see which works the best in different situations. I went to the beach one time to take pictures, and I left it on auto mode. The pictures were decent, but I didn’t necessarily like how the auto mode defaulted to landscape and increased the blue and green saturation. However, you can fix that that with some editing.

For editing, the NX300M comes with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5. Yes, my copy included a serial number. I don’t know why others might be missing serial numbers. It’s definitely a better software tool than I expected. However, people should keep in mind not to go too crazy with the special effects. Otherwise, images can start to look a bit fake. Try adjusting conservatively with the auto functions and work your way up with there.

5Very Impressed So Far
By Scott
Yes, my cell phone takes very good photos and video with enough light, but that tiny lens can only do so much. My DSLR is aging and out-dated (a Nikon D70s w/ 6MP), and is too big to take along on most trips and family outings when a real camera would be needed. As a result i started researching new cameras. I decided that the price, size, and feature sets of mirrorless CSCs made that form factor the right choice. I researched CSCs, and came to the conclusion that Samsung offers the best bang for my buck.

I looked at the NX3000 and the NX300/300M, but came to believe that the weaker focus system, lack of touchscreen, smaller, lower-res screen (it IS the only viewfinder after all), and decreasing price of the 300 series made the 300M a better choice, even if it is slightly larger and more costly than the 3000. I also considered the NX300, but again, the NX300M’s price has come down to the point where the newer features (the Tizen OS, flip-up screen, NFC, etc.) made it a better value.

Got the camera a few weeks ago, and have already used it for HD video and a few hundred photos. I’m still learning the best ways to take different kinds of shots… I’ve shot a hockey game, family photos, and a day at the karting track. Definitely got some excellent photos, along with a lot of soft ones. But the potential is definitely there. And the 60fps 1080p video is fantastic. I’m impressed with the built-in mic as well.

The Tizen OS and interface, along with the touchscreen, provide a lot of options with easy navigation once you get accustomed to where everything is. It’s going to be a while before I finish getting through the manual and become familiar with all of the features of this camera.

There are smaller mirrorless cameras out there, but the size is close to ideal. And a camera can only be so small before it doesn’t feel like anything in your hand (plus they need room for that big sensor, the NFC and wifi radios, etc.). It is so much smaller and lighter than my DSLR, and it takes better pictures.

For the money (especially with the 300M at $500 on Amazon now), I didn’t find anything better in the CSC world. So far I have not been disappointed.

5Overall, it’s perfect device for consumers that require high photo qualities. Not perfect for professionals.
By Juls of Ant
I bought mine from different online store about a year ago. After using it for a long while here’s my review:

This is one of the most under appreciated camera in the last year. It’s overlooked by enthusiasts probably because many of camera review websites skipped reviewing this camera and therefore none recommended this camera to their followers / readers. You can probably find “quick overlook” or such but none in in-depth. It’s probably because of Samsung being an unknown camera company.

However, with this Samsung latest flagship camera, those websites ignoring Samsung has now started to finally take a notice. Their flagship as of this writing is NX1. But, that’s not what this review is for.

This NX300M is the perfect camera for vloggers, selfie-lovers, or simply photo enthusiasts. It’s great for travelers and as well as new parents that require high quality memory photos to enjoy in the future.

-The flip up screen is great for framing when you are included in the shot, ie, vlogging, filming you and your child together, selfie, etc.
-The touch screen is friendly and fully functional as if it’s a cellphone. Competitor’s touchscreens are mostly crippled to specific purpose only but this touchscreen is fully functional from scrolling the menu, to choosing your autofocus, to taking shots, to making setting changes. Nothing is crippled in the touchscreen.
-The small detachable flash is perfect size but not the best design. It’d be perfect if it was a pop-up to limit situation of missing the flash but this is an acceptable solution.
-The hot shoe does accept many attachments including external mic, different sizes of flash (speedlites), and wireless remote trigger.

As you many already know when it comes to lenses, Canon and Nikon are both unbeatable when it comes to lens choices. But Samsung is not falling too short on the important lenses for the targeted market. From the widest view fisheye 10mm, to “long zoom” 50 to 200mm, to portrait 85mm 1.4, and everything in between.

The picture quality is very pleasing to the eye. It’s very obvious that it is targeted to consumers. It makes your photos nice to look at and very nice to post online immediately without needing to alter before posting online.

The connectivity of this camera is next to none. It’s highly connected and almost a standalone device when sending your photo’s to whoever wants a copy straight from the camera to the emails to “requesters”. Or quickly posting them online to Facebook or save them straight to your cloud storage. It’s highly integrated that makes the use of this camera very easy, spoiling the users.

Overall, it’s perfect device for consumers that require high photo qualities. Not perfect for professionals.

Mirrorless Cameras are Digital Video cameras which provide the picture quality and versatility of professional Digital Single-Lens Reflex cameras (DSLRs), along with a mobility closer to regarding a more common “point and shoot” digital camera.
